Hayman Island Queensland Australia

5/24/2012

Award-winning Hayman is located in Australia’s magnificent Great Barrier Reef, and is one of the world’s most commended resort destinations and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Hayman presents an exclusive private island experience of natural splendor, serenity and exploration, but at a hefty price tag. Hayman Island is the most northerly of the Whitsunday Group and is situated about 28 kilometres north-east of Shute Harbour and about 900 kilometres north of Brisbane. Hayman offers you a feast for your eyes on any one of many bushwalks.
It is also the closest resort to the Great Barrier Reef with helicopter or cruiser transport giving guests the chance for coral viewing or diving.
Hayman Island
Originally developed in considerable style in the 1950s by Sir Reginald Ansett, the founder of the now defunct airline of that name, it is nearer the outer reef than most of the Whitsunday Islands. It also has good coral off its S coast, with more at nearby islands. For those who like more land-based exploration, there are several walking tracks around the island. Locality:
Hayman Island is just off the Queensland coast, in the Coral Sea. 12 mls NE of Shute Harbour. (it is 19 mls W of the Great Barrier Reef. 728 mls NW of Brisbane, 303 mls SE of Cairns, both with international airports. 20 mls N of Hamilton Island national airport). It is the most northerly of the Whitsunday group of islands. Just NW of much larger Hook Island.

There is effectively just one beach, which is in front of the hotel. It is a beautiful, long, gently curving arc of fairly coarse coral sand. The water is shallow and the sea tidal, so it recedes a long way when at ebb. The Hotel has an impressive array of designer boutiques as well as offering more normal holiday requirements.
During the daytime popular activities include tennis, squash, archery, basketball, putting green, and a golf driving range. Activities on the water include , snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, parasailing, inflatable rides, dinghy hire, water-skiing, sailing, windsurfing and paddle skis; boat drop-offs to other beaches and islands with picnic and scenic bush walks.
