Mountain range is an area that consist of numerous mountains. The mountain ranges usually have a beautiful and amazing scenery of the highlands or mountains. The mountain ranges also usually characterized by valleys or river channels which lying on the foot of the mountains. The several sharp peaks which caused by erosion also known as the major characteristic of the mountain ranges. There are many mountain ranges spread in this world and became the perfect place for mountain climbers to visit. The mountain ranges also a favorite place for photographers and geologist to explore. South America is one of the homes for famous mountain ranges in the world. Some huge and even the second longest mountain ranges of this world are here. And here are 5 famous mountain ranges in South America.

1. Andes




Andes is one of the most famous and the longest mountain ranges in the world. The mountain ranges which span along the western coast of South America is the longest continental or the biggest mountain range in the world. The Andes mountain range is the second longest mountain range on earth after the Ocean Ridge Mountain Range. The range of Andes area is about 8,000 km long, and about 700 km wide. The Andes also has the average height of about 4000 m. It is the second-highest mountain range in the world after the highest the Himalayas. The mountain range of Andes extends from north to south and lie in seven countries of South America. This chain of highlands took an area of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. The famous Mount Aconcagua at the border between Argentina and Chile is one of the parts of the Andes mountain ranges.


2. Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a mountain range situated about 40 km from the Caribbean coast, northeastern of Colombia. It is one of the most famous mountain ranges in South America. But probably there is a misconception when someone hears ‘Sierra Nevada’. Sierra Nevada also the name for other famous mountain ranges in the world. The North America also has a famous mountain range situated between California and Nevada, U.S. with the name Sierra Nevada. Sierra Nevada also a popular mountain range and tourist destination in the region of Andalusia, Spain. But the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta with its pyramid shape is very particular. The 5,700 meters height of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta also the highest coastal range in the world. The range has 38,505 sq km and surrounded by three departments; La Guajira, Magdalena and Cesar. One thing that popularizes the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is its close distance to the Andes, and has no any geological connection.


3. Sierras de Cordoba

Sierras de Cordoba is one of the most famous mountain ranges in South America which visited by about three million tourists each year. The mountain range which located in the Cordoba Province, central of Argentina’s has 2880 meters as the highest point with beautiful view of the highlands, valleys and lakes around. The mountain range of Sierras de Cordoba is also known for its mild climate, flora and fauna. It is home for more than 100 bird species. The Sierras de Cordoba which is much older than the Andes, is also one of the most famous tourist destinations in Argentina.

4. Wilhelmina Mountains

Wilhelmina Mountains (or Wilhelmina) Gebergte are a mountain range located in the central of Suriname. This mountain range extending about 113 kilometers from west to east and forming part of the uplands of Guiana Shield in South America. The mountain range which is named after the Queen Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands, has the Juliana Top with 1280 meters high as its highest point. Wilhelmina Mountains also covered in tropical rain forest with its indigenous wildlife and more than 2000 varieties of trees.


5. Mantiqueira Mountains

Mantiqueira Mountains, or also known as Serra da Mantiqueira, are one of the most beautiful and most famous mountain ranges in South America. The mountain range which reaches a height of 2798 meters also said to be the largest Brazilian mountain range. The mountain range which located in the southern of Brazil has a beautiful view of the highlands and became a favorite place for hikers, climbers and photographers.
