Monte Gordo Algarve Portugal

Monte Gordo is beginning to compete for tourist attention with its neighboring resorts to the west. Part of the bay area has been developed into a marina to compete with Vilamoura and the addition of new apartments and hotels is beginning to drastically increase visitor numbers to the area.
This area attracts mainly middlemarket families, bird-watchers, couples of all ages and singles. There is quite a mix of accommodation here, ranging from a large campsite and 3-star apartments to 3-, 4- and 5-star hotels.

A promenade road hugs the resort’s beach and some of the charm of the old fishing village has been retained. The area is flat and therefore suitable for the less mobile.

Temperatures tend to be a degree or two warmer than other resorts further west.

Locality:
Monte Gordo can be found in the very south east corner of Portugal (4 mls W of Vila Real, 33 mls E of Faro and the international airport). It is situated near the mouth of the River Guadiana (which separates Portugal from Spain). The whole area is flat, with pine forests to the north west.
A wide sandy beach backed by a promenade with dunes is present in the area with pine trees further out of town. The sea can be quite choppy and weather conditions may not favour inexperienced swimmers. A lifeguard is on duty during the peak summer months.

Apart from the beach and its variety of water sports there is very little to do nearby.
Further afield are the sights of Seville and there’s golf for those prepared to travel.
Not a place for serious ‘Night People’ – just bars, ‘live’ music and a club or two plus a casino. Seafront restaurants serve up local dishes and the usual fast food.

There are quite a few restaurants along the promenade specialising in fish and seafood. International dishes also available.
